EP. 8 Devon McDonald- Humility and Losses Create Powerful Leaders

“You want to work so hard that you maximize your chances of getting lucky”

This is a saying I’ve heard from many successful leaders. Basically, the harder you work, the more you put yourself in a position to capitalize on the opportunities around you.

A simple concept, but a lot harder to stick with, especially when you don’t see results right away.

Even more so, it’s a lot harder when you are the “6th man on a basketball team,” and not a starter. Putting in the hard work when you may not have the spotlight is tough, and gets even tougher when things don’t go your way.

We are hard-wired to look for instant gratification, but if we are to truly succeed long term, we need to get comfortable by putting in the work and believing that good things will happen. If you’re looking for some motivation through a powerful story, then this week’s episode with Devon McDonald is for you!

“If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough.” – Devon McDonald

  • In this episode, I chat with Devon McDonald, Partner at OpenView Ventures. An expansion stage venture capital firm investing in high-growth software companies such as Calendly, Datadog, Workfront, and Expensify.
  • Devon was an NCAA D1 college basketball athlete at Colgate University. After college, she started her career at Michael Page as Manager of Sales and Marketing.
  • Looking to grow and build her own career path, Devon then went on and carved a role for herself at OpenView in 2009, in a position that was really a guinea pig experiment.
  • Taking that role head-on, she crushed it, and since then has held various roles and projects in many different areas of the firm, and is now a Partner.
  • A story that is filled with strength, optimism, humility, and drive. Devon was also voted 20 women to watch in sales lead management

Some Things We Discuss:

  • How Devon’s NCAA D1 College Basketball experience prepared her for her career path
